Traditional LASIK Eye Surgery

Picture
LASIK or laser assisted in-situ keratomileusis is the most frequenty performed laser vision correction procedure. Numbing drops are instilled prior to the procedure to ensure that patients do not experience any discomfort. During LASIK, the surgeon uses a precise, motorized instrument to create a hinged flap of tissue on the outer surface of the cornea. The hinged flap is then folded back and the cool beam laser is then applied. It smoothly sculpts the eye's inner surface. Each pulse of the laser removes only a minute amount of corneal tissue - about 1/500th of the thickness of human hair.

After the LASIK vision correction procedure, which typically takes between five and fifteen minutes for both eyes, the corneal flap is replaced. Corneal tissue has extraordinary natural bonding qualities so no stitches are needed. Most LASIK patients notice a dramatic improvement in their vision immediately after the procedure. Vision may still fluctuate day to day. It may take 3-6 months for vision to stabilize.

VISX CustomVue For Custom LASIK.
The CustomVue procedure tailors vision correction for each individual. Treatment is "designed" by the unique characteristics of an individual's eyes. The VISX STAR S4 Excimer Laser System The STAR S4 from VISX represents the most advanced excimer laser technology available today.

Integrating data collected by the WaveScan WaveFront System, the STAR S4 utilizes these exclusive VISX technologies to deliver customized treatment: Variable Spot Scanning: Variable beam sizes from as small as 0.65 mm up to 6.5 mm, scanned over the treatment area, conserve tissue and optimize treatment times ActiveTrak 3-D Active Eye Tracking and Centering: Captures any movement of the eye during treatment and automatically sets the treatment center to right place. WaveScan Wavefront System WaveScan technology was originally developed for use in high-powered telescopes to reduce distortions when viewing distant objects in space.

This technology has now been applied to LASIK, measuring imperfections in the eye never before measured using standard methods for glasses and contact lenses. WaveScan-based digital technology identifies and measures imperfections in your eyes 25 times more precisely than standard methods. The powerful WaveScan software translates the information into a set of CustomVue treatment instructions for the laser. These digital treatment instructions are then transferred to the laser, driving a new level of precision and accuracy.

Clinical Study Results The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the VISX CustomVue procedure for correcting nearsightedness and astigmatism. The following are some of the FDA clinical study results one year after the VISX CustomVue procedure: 100% could pass a driving test without glasses or contact lenses 98% could see 20/20 or better without glasses or contact lenses 70% could see better than 20/20 without glasses or contact lenses Four times as many participants were very satisfied with their night vision after CustomVue, compared to their night vision with their glasses or contact lenses.

ORBTEK ORBSCAN
The Orbscan's high-tech computer can actually read and interpret the contours of your eyes and produce an incredibly detailed topographical map of your eyes. This full-color map tells the eye surgeon all he or she needs to know about your eyes' precise characteristics such as elevation, inclination, curvature, and prescription.
